Sam Allardyce: Fabio Capello wrong to ignore Blackburn’s Paul Robinson

• Blackburn manager says Capello has made ‘biggest mistake’
• Says ‘13 clean sheets speak for themselves’

The Blackburn Rovers manager, Sam Allardyce, believes the England coach, Fabio Capello, has made “completely the wrong decision” in leaving the goalkeeper Paul Robinson out of his preliminary World Cup squad.

Capello picked the Portsmouth veteran David James, Joe Hart – who has excelled while on loan from Manchester City to Birmingham – and West Ham’s Robert Green in the 30-man party from which he will choose his 23 for this summer’s tournament in South Africa.

Allardyce said Robinson’s form and experience warranted a place in the squad.

“I am staggered, totally. It is completely the wrong decision,” Allardyce told the Lancashire Telegraph. “If you look at [Robinson's] form for Rovers, there has not been a better goalkeeper who has been so consistent.

“Fabio has always said the people in form would get selected. There is nobody better than Paul Robinson at the moment, so there must be something before that has happened to put him off him, as a person and not as a goalkeeper.

“He has made the biggest mistake of his selection process, has Fabio. As much as I respect him for what he has done that is one big, big mistake.

“Thirteen clean sheets speak for themselves. There have to be other reasons why he hasn’t selected him because there is nobody in better form than Paul Robinson.

“Perhaps ‘Harty’ can run him close but he hasn’t got 40-odd England caps of experience and hasn’t played in any major championships so it would be much more valuable having Paul Robinson there than it would be to have Joe Hart – never mind the David James scenario, who is spasmodically in and out because it seems he has a bit of an injury problem.”

Portsmouth 0-0 Blackburn Rovers | Premier League match report

Portsmouth’s fate is creeping up on them. This draw means that their relegation from the Premier League will be confirmed should West Ham beat Everton tomorrow. Such an outcome is unlikely but cannot be ruled out by Avram Grant’s side given the torment this season is continuing to bring them.

Having had to deal with a farcical change of owners, a plunge into the administration and subsequent docking of points, the club is now also running out of players, with 14 unavailable to Grant ahead of this game, mainly due to injury. Given such a handicap, it was perhaps admirable that the hosts should prove so competitive here against opponents who came into the match buoyed by a 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Burnley the previous week.

Portsmouth’s supporters will have certainly been surprised by the point gained by their side. Fearing the worst, only 16,207 turned up to Fratton Park, Portsmouth lowest attendance since they gained promotion to the Premier League in 2003. Some of those who did show were also somewhat darkly dressed in T-shirts promoting ‘Portsmouth’s relegation party.’

The majority, it has to be said, were in good voice and instead celebrated in song their club’s participation in next week’s FA Cup semi-finals. The side may well be travelling to Wembley as a Championship club but will, nevertheless, go in decent heart following there display here.

Portsmouth were the better side for the majority of this rather uninspiring encounter with Jamie O’Hara a key figure in their attack. Indeed, it was that player, featuring at the front-tip of Portsmouth’s midfield diamond, who had the side’s best chance of the match, a header from John Utaka’s cross on 28 minutes that had to be hacked off the line by Gael Givet.

Blackburn’s best effort of the match came right at the end of the first-half when Christopher Samba, finding himself completely unmarked in the Portsmouth area, headed Morten Gamst Pedersen’s free-kick onto the base of the far post.

The second-half was a rather tetchy affair, the only standout moment of which was the sending-off Portsmouth’s Belgian full-back Anthony Vanden Borre for two bookable offences.

The hosts stood strong, however, with 10 men to eke out their first clean sheet in 15 matches. Next up, Wembley.

Squad sheets: Portsmouth v Blackburn Rovers

The inevitable could become a reality for Portsmouth this weekend. Should they lose this fixture and either Hull or West Ham win theirs then relegation to the Championship will be confirmed for Avram Grant’s men. Such an outcome has looked likely ever since Portsmouth were docked nine points for going into administration and the side may, in truth, welcome an end to the wait. The hosts’ many injuries makes defeat a genuine possibility against a side buoyed by their 1-0 victory away to bitter rivals Burnley last Sunday. Sachin Nakrani
